Laszlo Hotobagyi
Review by Marc Urselli-Scharer
Hungarian avant-garde musician Laszlo Hotobagyi is also known for his work as Hyro. In SUMMA TECHNOLOGIAE he explores the limits between real and surreal creating something which could be easily electronics, or as an experimental blend of synthetic material and sounds and tunes from ancient civilizations, such as the ones reported in the annales of Gayan Vttejak Society. The high quality and tight line between real and surreal will even let you forget that in those ages there were no recorders and no microphones... It sounds that much present that you will forget this for one long, concentrate and fine hour. Percussions, drones, cantations, voices... The bewildering and ancient beauty hidden between the beat patterns and the sound textures of this album is entirely to be discovered, but this is up to you now, if you dare to undertake such a distant and long voyage.
BIZARRE 11 MAGAZINE
Another Hungarian whose work has been released on numerous labels including his collaboration as HYRO via Tone Casualties. This project mixes vocal samples that draw on ethnic and traditional musics with soundscape electronics. World music of one form or another seems to have been an inspiration for this evocative piece of work. The nearest ports of call for reference points would be some of the output from Nation Records from the UK. But there is a surprise or two on this album, like the use of metal guitar samples on one track.
