Despite being a big fan of both The Simpsons and electronic/experimental music, I never expected there to be any sort of connection between the two. So I was more than a little surprised to flip open The Lighter Side of Dark, a compilation from the Hollywood-based label Tone Casualties (6353 Sunset Blvd. Hollywood CA 90028; http:/www.tonecasualties.com), to find Gabor Csupo - co-founder of Klasky Csupo Inc., the animation studio responsible for The Simpsons, Duckman, and other animation oddities of recent years - listed as both an artist and the label's founder. And you can trust me when I say that there is nothing "cartoony" about this music in the least. The collection culls two tracks from each of the label's seven previous releases, including work by Csupo, his fellow Hungarians B.P. Service, Accidental Orchestra and Andras Wahorn, and American folks Alien Farm and Hungry Ghost. The list of possible comparisons I could make is long indeed ( and favorable as well), so I'll just say that anyone with a fondness for electronic and experimental sounds like those offered by such labels as Extreme and Staalplaat should definitely get themselves a copy of this collection
