BIZARRE 11 MAGAZINE

Strange sound mutations from Hungary via unconventional music label from the States. Manipulated soundscapes metal on metal factory noises like a spaced out Test Dept. Rhythmic mechanic electronics loop hypnotically while waves of sensuous female restrains float atmospherically. Obtuse sound revertebrates, abstractions in space and time somewhere between Espendor Geometrico and Substanz T.

Reviews:

The surprise of the week is a batch of Hungarian artists (ANDRAS WAHORN, ACCIDENTAL ORCHESTRA, B.P. SERVICE) from a Hollywood label (!) called Tone Casualties (1258 North Highland Ave., Hollywood, CA 90038 213-463-0145). Fitting in with the above more in method than in mood, these artists are all pretty unusual, and unafraid of sounds way beyond the usual electronic palette.

DEEP SIGNAL

The sophomore effort from this most innovative Budapest band has finally arrived. After the release of their incredible "The Machines Print Soundmaps", György Szabó and Vince Kósa, along with singer/screamer KoKo, let loose their second release for the Tone Casualties imprint. One long piece of devastating, yet restrained, electronics and sound manipulations in the finest tradition of legends such as Test Dept. and Einstürzende Neubauten, and was a staple of their live shows at their first American appearances in Los Angeles. A truly unique force to be unleashed on America and the rest of the world!

BP SERVICE @ DAS BUNKER LONG BEACH, CA 9-19-97

At the usually all and only electro Das Bunker, The Tone Casualties artist BP. Service created raga-like noise with sampled sounds, creative drumming, and was accompanied by an occasional atmospheric female vocalist. During the majority of the performance, the two members performed to a stunned crowd by drumming on various metal constructions of pipes, trash cans, and by dumping bags of soda cans on the floor. The most interesting sound source were the two giant clear, but thick plastic curtains hung from the ceiling and equipped with contact mics. It was beaten and bashed by drumsticks and hands, creating a percussive and thunderous wash of sound. Unlike some of today's noise artists, BP. Service are a band to be seen live and heard on CD. - Octavia

BP. SERVICE - Deep Signal (Tone Casualties)

BP. Service create sophisticated electronic compositions that combine dance beats with experimental noisescapes. Deep Signal is the Budapest band's second release on Tone Casualties. It stands out because of it's wide variety of unusual sounds including: metallic sounds, chaotic whispers of noise, mysterious atmospheres, odd vocal manipulations, crushing noise, and fragile tinkerings. The almost twenty minute opening track is relaxed and somber, but it still grooves with pleasant beats, strange sampled sounds, and etheric female cries. The second track is minimal with gentle waves of the noises of passing motorists. A car alarm shatters the calm, transitioning the song into an echoing of metal. Breaking from the norm, the sixth track uses a child's chant repeated over and over above swelling strip instruments and tinkling chimes. There is a wealth of amazing sounds on Deep Signal that I would enjoy even more if they were incorporated into more concrete song structures, but the unconventional instruments are still worthwhile and enjoyable.
