The Criteria for the music signed to Casual Tonalities is simple. Music of which we can be proud. This CD, Nothing In Common, reflects that criteria. Says company president, Gabor Csupo (of renowned 'Rugrats' and 'Real Monsters' fame, "It (music) can be flashy, moody, happy, weird, whatever-- just so long as the quality remains high." In keeping with that spirit, Casual Tonalities presents the compilation Nothing In Common, a disc which truly lives up to its name, as the artists here have nothing in common (surprise)! With this in mind, Casual Tonalities gives you some quick snapshots of varied and very interesting bands like: |

WACO BROTHERS - The altar at which head Mekon Jon Langford worships (as well as Mark Durante from KMFDM and Alan Doughty of Jesus Jones). The band's ultra hip hybrid (half Cash, half Clash according to Rolling Stone magazine) is the antidote for those feeling cheated by indie music's cooption into the mainstream, or by those who appreciate the country punk/ connection of innocence, simplicity and honesty.
ACTION PLUS - A combo conceived of ex- PJ Harvey / Tom Waits axeman Joe Gore, Ursula Blind, Sally Dana and Smitty. Their sound deals in eerie dream soundtracks, spikey crime jazz and spaghetti western flavors. Imagine Burt Bacharach jamming with Bertolt Brecht!
PUGS - A Casual Tonalities jewel, this group of Japanese punkers are sure to be the next biggest musical import! Pugs are a powerful, sardonic band with a particularly warped sense of humor, great melodies, a frontwoman named Honey K - who performs kind of like Patti Smith crossed with Bjork and at least one B-52! All members are feared producers/ performers in their native country.
EENIE MEENIE - The vision of singer- songwriter Denise Siegel, this music rebelliously defies being pigeonholed. Her songs display a poetic breadth that allows her to embrace the most challenging subject matter in a way that is at once cathartic, earnest, and extremely original.
POLAK - Polak are brothers Piotr Fijalkowski (ex- singer/ guitarist with Adorable) and Kryzs Fijalkowski (of the Bardots), who live in Brighton and Norwich respectively and unrespectably. They were formed on a bored Boxing Day (December 26) in a pub near the family home. The half-drunken idea became a half-drunken reality, with the recording "Not Listening," Polak's first, and to date only, track recorded in Brighton, England.
HAPPYFACE - This trio emanates a powerful mixture of alternative rock laced with original keyboard textures and intros. Their music consists of melodic tunes with strong guitar tracks that beg to be played over and over.
VELVET DOGS - This quartet of ex-pat Geordies formed in 1993, extensively gigging in both Britain and the European continent, wowing the locals with their English pop sensibilities. After relocating in February of 1996, they have continued their glam- slam of heavy music and insightful lyrics.
HAZE - Fronted by Miami based Haze, the band bearing her name is a combination of funk, industrial, fusion and hard-edged rock.
CAPTAIN KRUNCH - Captain Krunch captures the essence of '70s acid rock and combines it with sweeping Moog riffs, full background vocals and complex guitar pyrotechnics. Originally from NYC, this five piece band now calls LA its home. They have an LP coming out in the Spring of '97 entitled, "Veterans of Disorder."
MARTINIS - Starting off in a little automobile bound for Los Angeles, Joey Santiago and Linda Mallari formed the nucleus of what had turned out to be a wonderful creative partnership with Linda's creative writing style and Joey's famous power guitar style (after all, he was the 'soundgiver' to the Pixies).
FAT - With members ranging from past members of death- metal bands to Madness, FAT is a thumping, jumping, rap-rock instant classic that passes the all-important Beavis and Butthead acid test.
KRACKHOUSE - Made up of very talented members of the NYC Downtown improv collective, Krackhouse is the veteran voice of experimental weirdness and avant- rock.
MR. HENRY - Making a huge dent in the NY music scene, Mr. Henry has been building fans all across the US since the group formed. Mr. Henry's buzz has been exceptional among industry-folks and their fans. The track featured on this CD is great, listenable, smart, edgy rock & roll.
GUADALOOP - The sweet sounds of Guadaloop meshed with their pulse- raising guitar sounds make this band's presence felt on"Nothing In Common."
